Official Warnings Concerning Diabetes and Blood Glucose Monitoring for Abilify (Aripiprazole)
The Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) for Abilify (aripiprazole), authorized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), contains strict warnings regarding metabolic risks, diabetes, and hyperglycemia under Section 4.4: "Special warnings and precautions for use".
Official Warnings Regarding Diabetes and Glycemia
- Risk of Severe Hyperglycemia: Cases of hyperglycemia, sometimes extreme and associated with ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar coma (which can be fatal), have been reported in patients treated with atypical antipsychotics, including aripiprazole.
-
Clinical Symptoms Monitoring: The protocol mandates active monitoring for key clinical signs of hyperglycemia in all patients taking Abilify:
- Polydipsia (excessive and persistent thirst)
- Polyuria (increased frequency and volume of urination)
- Polyphagia (excessive hunger)
- Asthenia / Severe fatigue
-
Regular Biological Monitoring: Regular fasting blood glucose monitoring is recommended:
- Mandatory in patients with pre-existing diabetes to detect any deterioration in glycemic control.
- In patients presenting risk factors (family history of diabetes, obesity, weight gain during treatment).
- Patient and Family Information: Prescribers are required to inform patients and their families so they can immediately identify these warning symptoms and perform blood glucose testing without delay.
Official Reference Documents
- European SmPC for Abilify (EMA): Available in the European Union Community Register database (ec.europa.eu/health/documents/community-register).
- Public Information Leaflet (E-Compendium / FAMHP): Explicitly mentions, under precautions and severe side effects, the onset or worsening of diabetes requiring immediate medical consultation.
